The Process
01. Preparation
Preparation for spraying is a crucial step to ensure a smooth professional finish.
It begins with thoroughly cleaning the item that’s going to be sprayed, to remove dirt, grease, and any contaminants that could affect the paint adhesion.
Next, any parts that need separate work are disassembled to allow better access and a cleaner result. Any rust or damaged areas are then treated by grinding back the rust and smoothing the surface using different gritted sandpapers, creating a solid base for primer.
Finally, the item is carefully masked up using tape and protective coverings to shield areas that should not be painted, preventing overspray from primer and paint ensuring a neat, high-quality finish.
02. Priming
Priming is an essential stage in preparing for painting, as it creates a sealed and even surface for the topcoat. Primer such as epoxy or urethane is applied to seal the surface and provide a uniform base that improves paint adhesion and durability.
Once the primer has cured, block sanding is carried out to level the surface and identify any low spots or imperfections that may need further attention.
Wet sanding is also used during this process, as it helps achieve a smoother finish, reduces dust, and results in better overall paint quality before the final coats are applied.
03. Painting
Painting begins with applying the base coat, which provides the colour and overall appearance. The base coat is sprayed in even layers, allowing proper flash times between coats so that solvents can evaporate, and the paint can dry correctly, preventing defects and ensuring a smooth finish. Once the base coat has fully flashed off, the clear coat is applied over the top. The clear coat protects the colour from damage such as UV rays and weather, while also adding gloss and helping the paintwork last longer and maintain its finish.
04. Finishing
The finishing stage is the final step in the painting process and is focused on achieving a flawless appearance. Once the paint has fully cured, wet sanding is carefully carried out to remove any imperfections such as dust nibs or slight unevenness in the surface. This process brings out a deep shine and results in a mirror like finish that enhances the overall quality and professionalism of the paint job.
